Additional The Real Deadwood: True Life Histories of Will Bill Hickock, Calamity Jane, Outlaw Towns, and Other Characters of the Lawless West Information

Supported by strong ratings and a rich history, The Real Deadwood provides background and historical accuracy for the figures depicted on the hit HBO series, and takes a broader look at the times that spawned them. Covering law and order, politics, journalism, and early medicine, and examining some "historical guest stars" who may play a factor in future Deadwood episodes (Teddy Roosevelt was an acquaintance of series protagonist Seth Bullock and made several visits to the lawless town; Bullock turned away Wyatt Earp when he offered his services as a lawman)-The Real Deadwood will allow readers to traverse the unpaved streets of an outlaw town without ever getting their boots dirty.

What Customers Say About The Real Deadwood: True Life Histories of Will Bill Hickock, Calamity Jane, Outlaw Towns, and Other Characters of the Lawless West:

He found it short, informative, and enjoyable, and he especially liked the historic photos. My husband's not much of a book reader, but he was through this quickly and keeps referring to it. I bought this book for my husband from Amazon, along with the last two TV seasons of "Deadwood", which my husband really loves. He couldn't wait to pour through this book, checking out facts of the 'real' Deadwood.

Cite a source. Sounds great but its not true. A waste of trees and your time. This book plays fast and loose with the facts and is all too ready to spread rumors, myths and cliches. For example, the book posits the myth that Mark Twain visited Deadwood.

I would recommend this book. I enjoyed the photos and captions of the various people that shaped Deadwood. I found the book ti be informative, interesting and entertaining. There were a few parts that were a bit "dull" but all in in all in was a good book.

I could have done a few calculus problems and driven a car while reading it, so shallow it was. All this book made me do was ask more questions about the characters and want to find a work on Deadwood which actually has a works cited page (at least one). Because the only work that Ames seems to have done is watch the TV show and put together information that could have been gleaned from Wikipedia (if he even went that far). The book was bloated a bit with large print and a lot of empty space around the margins of the text. Instead Ames throws out anecdotal and cursory character sketches that are all over the place in terms of timeline and presentation. Yep, just like most of the readers that have written a review of this book, I came to this short work because of the HBO series Deadwood.

Why. The only good thing about this book was that it was a quick read. What I hoped for was at least a TINY bit of scholarly research on the real mining town. If you're gonna write a cash-in on a popular series, at least you can present the information in a nice way, at least organize it coherently. If his 56 novels are anything like this book, you would do well to steer clear from them. What I came away with was the disappointing realization that the fictional series did a better job at portraying this settlement on the edge of civilization than the writer of this work could ever do.

There is no indepth reporting on any of the major figures involved in the town's life.

Great pictures. Very informative. I purchased this book because I wanted some history on Deadwood. I thoroughly enjoyed the series on HBO and wanted some more information.
